Thomas James spoke to us about his love for Bonnie Tyler and playing make believe as an adult.
Favourite music video?
Bonnie Tyler, Total Eclipse of the Heart is always a go to for this. It’s fucking baffling. It’s my ‘guys, shut up, have you ever watched this’ 3AM youtube session big hitter. Also a jam.
Tell us one thing we don’t know about you.
I sleep walk occasionally. It’s a pain.
What is your favourite word in the English language?
Beatles or Stones?
What would the title of your autobiography be?
Here Lies (Hear Lies). Get it? Because I’m dead by the time it comes out, and will be full of lies. I’d buy that book based on the pun alone.
What’s your hangover cure?
Phoning someone who was there to make sure I didn’t do anything truly ridiculous. I find it takes the edge of the existential dread. Then a Diet Coke. Then a pint by lunch.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
It’s just a bloody lovely thing to do. I think we’re stupidly lucky to essentially still play at make believe as adults.
A woman brings eleven-year-old Steve home and tells his mother that he was caught playing doctors and nurses with Mary, her eleven-year-old daughter. Steve’s mother says, “Steady on, they are bound to be curious about sex at that age…” “Curious about sex!? What the…” replies Mary’s mother. “He’s taken her fucking spleen out.”
You’re stranded on a desert island, you’ve got one book. What is it?
Here Lies. The Thomas James Story. I’m adding the chapter about that time I got chucked off that fucking cruise, and I crafted a boat out of salmon leather, and sailed home victoriously. Or if you want a serious. answer, my favourite book is “The Master & the Margarita’ by Mikhail Bulgakov.
How do you stay sane at the airport?
What was your first/most embarrassing email address?
If you weren’t a director what would you be?
Healthier. Happier. An all-round better person.
Draw a picture of yourself.
