Black Dog Chat: Shynola

When it comes to making banging content, the director’s vision carries the project from beginning to end. That’s why we wanted to peel back the curtain and find out what makes our Black Dog Directors tick.

Filmmakers and mixed media artists Jason Groves, Chris Harding and Richard ‘Kenny’ Kenworthy make up the creative collective known as Shynola. What started as an art school bond over a highly productive collaboration of films, painting, comics, poetry and music evolved into a massively talented trio of directors. Their work spreads across the commercial space for brands like Delta, Beats and Hulu, and into the music video space with mesmerizing and cleverly creative music videos, like Hot Chip’s “Need You Now”, Queens of the Stoneage “Go with the Flow” and Coldplay’s “Paradise.”  Most recently, their video with Nowness, “Untaggable,” explores how #music moves us with a seamless edit of two dancers interpreting the same choreography in different ways. (Watch it below!) They also created crazy cool neon titles for Netlix’s new series “GLOW.”
Kenny, one third of the trio, took a moment out of his busy schedule to chat with us and give us a look into one of the personalities that make up Shynola. Check it out:

Favorite music video?

Björk ‘Bachelorette,’ by Michel Gondry. It’s simply wonderful and one of the very few music videos which warrants repeat viewing.

Tell us one thing we don’t know about you.

I don’t go by my real name, nor does my wife, nor do both my parents. I should point out this wasn’t a conscious decision.

What is your favorite word in the English language?

What a ridiculous question. By quantity: ‘bloody’.

Beatles or Stones?

Thanks for the offer, but neither.

What would the title of your autobiography be?

‘Richard.’

What’s your hangover cure?

Fried egg sandwich.

What do you enjoy most about your work?

For me, a blank piece of paper and a freshly sharpened pencil never gets old.

Favorite joke?

Q: Why can’t Stevie Wonder see his friends?

A: He’s married.

You’re stranded on a desert island, you’ve got one book. What is it?

Howard I. Chapelle’s ‘Boatbuilding.’

How do you stay sane at the airport?

I wasn’t sane when I arrived.

What was your first/most embarrassing email address?

I’m still using it!

If you weren’t a director what would you be?

Melted down into glue.

Draw a picture of yourself.

Wow. We are thoroughly impressed.
