When it comes to making banging content, the director’s vision carries the project from beginning to end. That’s why we wanted to peel back the curtain and find out what makes our Black Dog Directors tick.
Sam Spiegel is an incredibly talented director/musician/producer/DJ hybrid. Sam has knack for collaborating on some of the most successful and innovative projects in mainstream pop culture. He has scored spots for Nike, Cadillac and Honda, as well as “Hello Tomorrow” for Adidas, which incidentally won a Cannes Gold Lion for Best Music and a Silver CLIO for Original Music. He has also scored prominent films, like Spike Jonze’s cult skateboarding classic Yeah Right!, Jackass 3D, the HBO Documentary Pretty Things and Drew Barrymore’s Whip It. His provocative video for N.A.S.A’s “Jihad Love Squad” proved pivotal in re-contextualizing the word “jihad.” And most recently, his short film series for NatGeo’s Genius, helped bring to life Albert Einstein’s more whimsical notion of daydreaming in music.
Sam took a moment out of his busy schedule to candidly chat about a few of his favorite things, how he stays sane at the airport and what he would be doing if he wasn’t directing. Check it out:
Favorite Music Video?
This is a really hard question. There’s so many! I love anything Romain Gavras does…. There’s a great Michel Gondry video for a song called “Lucas with the Lid Off” from the 90’s that I love. There’s this Korean artist, Hitchhiker, that does his own videos that I love, “10$” is my favorite. There’s just way too many that are my favorite to even do a top-10 list, so I’ll just leave it at that.
