Die Antwoord stay true to their insane aesthetic in their video for “Banana Brain”.
A party scene oozing with neon paint, gun flashes, and rebellion, the latest video co-directed by Terence Neale and the group’s male singer Ninja gives you a ride of a lifetime. Telling the classic “girl doses parents with sleeping pills to go party” story, Die Antwoord showcases their over the top absurdist vision this time including drugs, hallucinations, make-out sessions, and several references to shamed South African sprinter/murderer Oscar Pistorius-with Ninja wearing fake leg blades and at one point attempting to shoot a bathroom door down.
The single is taken from the rap rave duo’s upcoming album Mount Ninji and Da Nice Time Kid expected on September 16th. According to a statement shared by Yolandi and Ninja earlier this year, fans can expect the upcoming album to be filled with “dark and ratty” tracks complimented by “sometimes vulnerable and sweet and romantic” tracks “full of mystery and win”.
This is not Die Antwoord’s first collaboration with Terence; it follows the international success of the duo’s “Baby on Fire” released in 2012. So far, “Banana Brain” has over 5 million views on Youtube alone and continues to climb.
Making complete sense of this video isn’t a prerequisite for enjoying it. Take a trip with “Banana Brain” above, and check out more of Terence Neale’s work here.
