Director Aya Tanimura has been selected to participate in Sundance Institute’s first Virtual Reality Storytelling Lab.
The VR Storytelling Lab is a joint effort between Sundance Institute’s Diversity Initiative and New Frontier Story Lab with Google/YouTube to share the craft and tools of this emerging medium. Aya was nominated by Milton Liu at Visual Communications, having completed a directing fellowship there a few years ago.
“I was lucky enough to go to [RSA director] Robert Stromberg‘s VR Company where I encountered The Martian VR experience and was completely blown away. My mind was going crazy with all these ideas and things I want to try but then realized I had very little knowledge of the process to create VR content. This lab is going to allow me to gather firsthand knowledge and the tools needed so I can go about pitching and creating the content that I am excited to bring to life,” Aya announced.
Since 2007, the Sundance Institute’s New Frontier program has fostered exciting independent artists pushing the boundaries of story at the convergence of art and technology. New Frontier artists, creative technologists, advisors, and audiences are experimenting with the language, forms, tools, and methodologies that will become the standards for future storytellers. Google’s YouTube technology and creator community has an even longer history of creating independent stories on the digital platforms in democratized and innovative ways.
We can’t wait to see what this opportunity will bring.
