Fresh off receiving the 2013 MVPA Awards honor of Director of the Year, Black Dog’s own Floria Sigismondi impresses us mere mortals even more, announcing the launch of her signature record label, Mamaroma. The imprint takes off with the 7” debut single “Montauk Fling” by LA-based singer/multi-instrumentalist Lawrence Rothman, released with an accompanying Sigismondi-directed music video premiering today exclusively on NOWNESS.
Black Dog couldn’t be more excited for Floria’s new endeavor, an artist whose profound influence on the music world is matched by her unrelenting passion for it. “Music plays such an integral part in the conceptualizing of my visual ideas as a director,” says Sigismondi. “In my years of music video directing I have come across a lot of undiscovered and simply amazing music made by my friends.” It was Sigismondi’s desire to curate and share unheard new music to others that inspired her to set up Mamaroma “as a home for some of these musicians I love.” Its main focus will be vinyl releases, with record artwork and accompanying music videos created by Sigismondi herself.
Mamaroma opens its doors with the debut 7” release of Lawrence Rothman’s throbbing single “Montauk Fling.” On introducing the new artist, she says, “The music of Lawrence Rothman has a dark cinematic feel that is a great introduction for Mamaroma.” Sigismondi took to the famed Chateau Marmont to helm the suitably haunting film for the track, viewable on NOWNESS.
